What's New

The Elantra gets a clean-sheet redesign for 2007, making it the seventh all-new Hyundai model in just 24 months. The new Elantra is bigger, more fuel efficient in automatic form, and has a new emphasis on safety, with features such as anti-lock brakes and side curtain air bags standard in all models. One thing that hasn't changed is value; the Elantra is brimming with standard equipment.

Reviews

The Hyundai Elantra was introduced in the early 1990s, but it wasn't until after the turn of the century that this Korean compact sedan really came into its own as a competitor for the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. A 2007 redesign aims to make the Elantra even more competitive, as the new Elantra boasts more interior space than nearly all of its rivals and it has a strong emphasis on safety; anti-lock brakes, front seat-mounted side air bags, and two-row side curtain air bags are standard across the board.

Let's admit this first: Bargain-priced compact sedans typically aren't love at first sight for shoppers, who in this price range tend to be a very practically minded lot. For the same money, they could get a two- or three-year-old luxury car - probably one with a little more street cred and more creature comforts - but they opt for a new car with no previous abuses, a clean slate, and a full warranty. It's all about priorities, and here it's about the frugal car-as-appliance. Shoppers of simple compacts also may have long commutes on congested urban highways, tight budgets, and busy lives, and are looking at getting the most car for the money, with low running costs and reasonable room and comfort.
