What’s New?
The S2000, Honda’s two-seat sports car, was extensively updated for the 2006 model year and is unchanged for 2007. For 2006, the car was updated with electronic drive-by-wire throttle, Vehicle Stability Assist, a maintenance minder, standard headrest speakers designed to provide enhanced sound even when the top is down, an outside temperature gauge, revised seat and console designs, a new alloy wheel design, and one new exterior color choice—Laguna Blue Pearl.

Overview
Launched as a 2000 model, the Honda S2000 combines performance attributes—including very sharp and dynamic handling—that can be enjoyed on a daily commute or in a competitive track environment. The S2000 was designed to provide the sort of dynamic handling enjoyed by driving enthusiasts. Even with its engine mounted in front of the two-seat passenger compartment, the Honda roadster provides 50/50 front/rear weight balance, and the nimble suspension is engineered to take advantage of the balanced character and the engine’s power curve.

Propulsion for the S2000 comes from a high-revving, 237-hp, 2.2-liter 4-cylinder VTEC engine. Power flows to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter. Standard features include a power retractable convertible top, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, leather trimmed seats, and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. An aluminum hardtop and XM Satellite Radio are available options.

The Competition
The Honda S2000 competes in the Compact Premium Sporty segment, which consists of eight models. Buyers in this segment look for exterior styling, performance, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report, SM were the Nissan 350Z (24,635 units sold), the now-discontinued Acura RSX (16,996), and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class (16,415). The Honda S2000 sold 6,271 units in 2006, a decrease of 19.4 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact Premium Sporty segment include the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, and the Porsche Cayman and Boxster. Joining the segment in 2007 is the Volvo C70.
