Honda’s midsize crossover SUV is now in its second generation. The eight-seat Pilot features a boxy design, and employs the same platform as the Honda Odyssey and Accord sedan. Honda says the Pilot combines easy handling with a strong enough frame to handle towing and off-road use. The 2010 Pilot carries over from the previous year, in which it received an extensive redesign.
The entry-level LX trim has 17-inch wheels, a lift-up glass hatch, a seven-speaker CD/radio sound system, keyless entry, cruise control, front and rear air conditioning, and full power accessories. The EX and EX-L trims gradually add features such as alloy wheels, an in-dash CD changer, tri-zone automatic climate controls, leather upholstery, and a sunroof. The top-line Touring trim has a power liftgate, a 10-speaker stereo, navigation system with voice recognition, Bluetooth connectivity, and a back-up camera. A rear entertainment system is available on the upper-level trims. Maximum cargo space is 87 cu. ft.
Front-wheel drive is standard on all Honda Pilots, but all-wheel drive is available. All trim levels get a 250-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the pilot delivers 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway; the numbers are 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway with all-wheel drive.
Standard safety features include active front head restraints, anti-lock disc brakes, stability assist with traction control, front-seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The NHTSA gave the Pilot five stars in front- and side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Pilot "Good" ratings for frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
