Rolled out as a prototype in 2005, the Honda FCX Clarity may not be bought in the United States—only leased, and only to approved customers, and only in parts of California where hydrogen fuel is readily available. The FCX Clarity is a totally electric, zero-emissions car that generates power via a fuel cell that runs on hydrogen. It can run as much as 240 miles between refuelings, Honda says. (Refills are accomplished at a designated hydrogen refueling station.) The FCX is a front-wheel-drive sedan that seats 4 and features a distinctive futuristic fastback profile with prominent rear fenders.

The 2009 Honda FCX Clarity is available in one color—a dark red known as Star Garnet Metallic—and in a single trim. It runs on 16-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. The interior features earth tones, with silver and black accents. The seating material is a proprietary fabric, largely plant-based, that produces 30% less carbon dioxide than conventional petroleum-based polyester, according to Honda. The FCX Clarity also offers a roomy cabin, dual-zone automatic climate control, power accessories, Bluetooth connectivity, heated and cooled seats, rear console, voice-controlled navigation system, and much more. The trunk and under-floor compartment combined provide 13.1 cubic feet of storage space, according to the manufacturer. Leg room consists of 42 inches in front, and 38 inches in the rear.

The 2009 Honda FCX Clarity’s 100-kilowatt electric motor generates 134 horsepower and 189 lb.-ft. of torque. It works with a 1-speed direct-drive system.

Standard safety features on the 2009 Honda FCX Clarity include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, a Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), 6 air bags, active front head restraints, and a rearview camera.

The 2009 Honda FCX Clarity is available on a 3-year lease for $600 per month.
