The Five Hundred is the successor to the long-running Ford Taurus, but it is a very different vehicle, revealing Ford's desire to do better in this high-volume segment. It's a big car featuring tall, upright seating and a cavernous 21-cubic foot trunk. Borrowing some styling bits from the far bolder Ford Five Hundred concept car, the production model comes off as a nice family vehicle at an attractive price. Its V6 engine, while not strong on horsepower, returns good fuel economy and can be mated to either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. If the Five Hundred has a weak spot, it can be found in its styling. Though its Volkswagen Passat-like shape is pleasing to the eye, it pales when compared to such striking designs as the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.
