This hybrid version of the Ford Escape, a small five-seat SUV, was introduced in 2004. For the 2010 model year, Ford has added integrated blind-spot mirrors as a standard feature. Optional safety extras include the MyKey function (which allows parents to restrict vehicle speed and audio volume) and the Active Park Assist system, which helps drivers parallel park with the touch of a button via an ultrasonic-based vehicle sensing system.

The air conditioner is now electrically driven instead of belt-driven from the gas engine. As a result, the Escape’s auto-stop feature, which shuts off the engine at a full stop, now works even with the air conditioning on.

The base-level Ford Escape Hybrid features 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, full power accessories, cruise control, a four-speaker sound system, and an optional sunroof—which is standard with the Limited trim. The Limited also has rear parking assist and rearview camera, leather upholstery, multicolor ambient lighting, heated front seats and mirrors, and extra chrome on the outside. Options on either trim level include step bars, touch screen navigation system combined with an upgraded sound system, digital musical storage, and Sirius travel link. The Limited also offers an optional automatic parallel parking system. Maximum cargo space is 65 sq. ft.

The 2010 Escape Hybrid’s powertrain combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor/generator, which together produce 177 hp. The Escape Hybrid is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive—the latter with an extra electric motor for added power to the rear wheels. The EPA estimates that the Escape Hybrid delivers 34 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive, and 30 city/27 hwy. with all-wheel drive.

The Escape Hybrid received five stars on all NHTSA tests, and “Good” ratings on all tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

Starting MSRP for the base-level 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid was $29,860.
