What’s New?
The Edge is Ford’s all-new, 5-passenger crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It uses the same car-like platform found on the Fusion sedan and exudes fresh American styling that helps distinguish it from the competition in this rapidly growing segment. Sole power is a 265-hp V-6 engine mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission.

Overview
Crossover utility vehicles like the Edge represent the fastest-growing segment in the U.S. auto market, eclipsing even the stellar growth of SUVs witnessed in the 1990s. SUV and minivan buyers are attracted to CUVs because of their fuel efficiency and car-like handling, while traditional car buyers are lured by the CUV’s roomy and versatile interiors and all-wheel-drive capability. While many CUVs are designed to look similar to SUVs, Ford took the Edge in a different direction. From its distinctive three-bar chromed grille and aggressively raked windshield to its high-mounted rear spoiler, the Edge boasts new contemporary styling that is neither sedan nor SUV.

The midsize Edge comes in three trim levels: SE, SEL, and SEL Plus. Base SE models come equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, a 4-speaker CD stereo with an MP3 player jack, and full power accessories. Front side air bags and curtain side air bags are standard, as are ABS brakes and traction/anti-skid control. One of the Edge’s more notable options is a Vista Roof, which is a two-section panoramic glass roof. The portion over the front seats works like a typical sunroof, while a fixed glass panel spans the second row of seats; power-operated cloth shades can close off both sections. Leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, a navigation system, satellite radio, and a DVD entertainment system are also available.

Ford outfits the new Edge with an aluminum 3.5-liter V-6 that delivers substantially more power than the former 3.0-liter unit that was the brand’s mainstay for V-6 engines for years. The new 3.5-liter engine meets stringent ultra-low-emission vehicle regulations and comes standard with an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission that Ford says delivers 7 percent better fuel economy than a 4-speed automatic. The Edge comes in two- or all-wheel drive and can tow up to 3500 pounds when equipped with the optional towing package.

The Competition
The Ford Edge competes in the Midsize Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment, which consists of 13 models. Buyers in this segment look for comfort, reliability, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider Study^SM and the Escaped Shopper Study.^SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,^SM were the Toyota Highlander (129,794 units sold), Nissan Murano(81,362), and Chrysler Pacifica (78,243). The Ford Edge sold 2,201 units in 2006 in its first year on the market. Other models offered in the Midsize CUV segment include the Ford Freestyle, Buick Rendezvous, Subaru B9 Tribeca, and Hyundai Santa Fe. Joining the segment in 2007 are the GMC Acadia, Mazda CX-9, and Saturn Outlook.
