What’s New?
The Dodge Magnum was an all-new model for the 2005 model year. For 2006, the Magnum R/T version has a tire pressure monitoring system and the SXT and R/T are available with a rear-seat DVD entertainment system that includes a seven-inch screen mounted in the center console, a remote control, and two wireless headsets. The system can play DVDs, Windows Media Audio (WMA) files, CDs, and MP3 audio discs.
Overview
The Magnum may have the profile and roofline of a station wagon, but it doesn’t look or go like one. The Magnum is built on the same platform as the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, has aggressive lines, and offers Hemi V-8 power. But the Magnum also offers either rear- or all-wheel drive, can tow a trailer, and has 28 cubic feet of cargo area with the back seat in its upright position (and 71 cubic feet with the second row folded down). There's additional under-floor storage, and storage wells behind each rear wheel that can hold a gallon jug. Having the rear door hinged well forward in the roofline enhances access to the cargo area. The Magnum provides five-passenger seating.
The rear-drive Magnum SE has a 190-hp, 2.7L V-6 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include 17-inch wheels and tires, air conditioning, CD player, driver and passenger adjustable lumbar support, outside temperature display, four-wheel disc brakes, power locks, remote keyless/illuminated entry, cruise control, and tilt and telescoping steering column. The Magnum SXT is available with rear- or all-wheel drive and comes with a 250-hp, 3.5L V-6 engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include electronic stability control, all-speed traction control, anti-lock brakes, a cargo net, a 276-watt Boston Acoustics audio system, illuminated visor vanity mirrors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Magnum R/T comes with rear- or all-wheel drive and features a 340-hp, 5.7L Hemi V-8 engine with multi-displacement system technology that shuts off four cylinders when the vehicle is just cruising down the road. This feature can improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent, but when you put your foot to the floor, the R/T sprints to 60 miles per hour in 6.3 seconds. Standard features include 18-inch wheels, power and heated fold-away mirrors, dual exhaust pipes, and leather seating.
A Magnum SRT8 comes with a 425-hp, 6.1L Hemi V-8 and can sprint from a standing start to 60 miles per hour in little more than five seconds. It rides on a strengthened suspension, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, Goodyear F1 high-performance tires, and has large brakes that can stop the wagon from 60 miles per hour in approximately 110 feet.
The Competition
Magnum competes in the Large Conventional segment, along with 13 other bread-and-butter sedans. Value is key in this predominantly domestic-branded segment.
According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM the Chevrolet Impala led this group in calendar year 2005 with sales of 246,481 vehicles. Other sales leaders included the Chrysler 300 (144,048), Pontiac Grand Prix (122,398), and Ford Five Hundred (107,932). Dodge sold 52,487 Magnums in calendar year 2005.
