What’s New?
The 2006 Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan are carryover vehicles from the 2005 model, which introduced the Stow ‘n Go feature. This innovative seat storage mechanism features second-row seats that fold into the floor and provide for a wide variety of people- and cargo-carrying options. When the seats are in their upright positions, the empty space can be used to store other items.

Overview
Chrysler launched the minivan segment more than two decades ago, and in the ensuing years, the company has sold more than 11 million of these people-pleasing family movers.

The Dodge Caravan and long-wheelbase Grand Caravan have been continuously upgraded with new features since the introduction of the current generation in 1996. The 2006 models include such new-in-2005 features as Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system; an overhead rail system with moveable or removable storage units; multi-stage front airbags and inflatable driver-side knee blocker; three-row side-curtain airbags; a warning system that activates when sliding side doors are opened; rear park assist; UConnect hands-free telephone access; factory-installed Sirius Satellite Radio; and a rear-seat video entertainment system. All of the interior enhancements were accompanied by a exterior facelift that includes a new grille and front fascia.

According to Dodge, Caravan SE is the lowest-priced vehicle in the minivan segment. It comes with a 150-hp, 2.4L, four-cylinder engine as well as front airbags, air conditioning, and a CD player. The Dodge Caravan SXT has a 180-hp, 3.3L V-6 engine, dual-zone air conditioning, power locks/windows/rear vents, as well as second-row bucket seats and a tilt steering column. The longer Grand Caravan SE has the same 3.3L V6 as the short-wheelbase SXT, as well as anti-lock disc brakes, sliding DoorAlert, and a third row seat that folds into the floor. The Grand Caravan SXT has a 205-hp, 3.8L V-6, Stow ‘n Go second row seating, power sliding doors, three-zone temperature control, and an 8-way power driver’s seat.

The Competition
The Caravan competes in the Midsize Van category, a segment in which price, safety, seating and cargo versatility, and entertainment features are key elements to sales success.

According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM the Caravan and Grand Caravan led the segment in sales in 2005, with 226,771 units sold during the calendar year. Following closely was the Caravan’s cousin, the Chrysler Town & Country (180,759 units in 2005). Next were the Honda Odyssey (174,275) and Toyota Sienna (161,380).
