A small sporty crossover SUV, the BMW X3 has continued to evolve from its introduction six years ago, particularly with regard to the engine, suspension, exterior fascias, and interiors. For 2010, the X3 gains HD radio, but loses its moonroof as standard equipment. BMW says the X3 offers a luxurious cabin, high performance, generous space for passengers and cargo, and brisk handling.

The BMW X3 comes in one trim level: the xDrive 30i. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, leatherette upholstery, 10-speaker stereo with auxiliary radio jack, leather-covered steering wheel, eight-way adjustable front seats, keyless entry, automatic climate control, automatic headlights, and heated side mirrors.

There are several options packages available. The Sport Activity package includes running boards, 18-inch wheels, sport steering wheel, and rear privacy glass. The Premium package includes leather upholstery, auto-dimming mirrors, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Cold Weather package includes heated front and rear seats. The Sport package includes stiffer suspension, sport front seats and steering wheel, and special body accents.

Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are available, as are higher-performance tires. Other options include premium audio, navigation system, heated seats and steering wheel, and parking sensors. The X3 can tow 3,500 lbs. and has 71 cu. ft. of cargo volume. BMW says the car’s aluminum components result in lighter weight and a smoother ride on rough surfaces.

All-wheel drive is standard on the BMW X3 xDrive 30i. Owners may choose a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with manual shift control as a no-cost option. The engine is a 260-hp 3.0-liter aluminum/magnesium inline six-cylinder engine that produces 225 lb.-ft. of torque.

EPA estimates are 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined with an automatic transmission, and 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined with the manual. Safety features include a full complement of airbags, as well as antilock disc brakes, stability control, and hill descent control.

The 2010 BMW X3 starts around $38,850.
