The small, sporty crossover SUV in BMW’s lineup, the X3 has acquired a new name for 2009: X3 xDrive 30i. Aside from the name change, the X3 is little changed from the 2008 model year. BMW says the X3 offers generous space for passengers and cargo, as well as brisk handling and steering.
The single trim level offers 17-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, leatherette upholstery, 10-speaker stereo with auxiliary radio jack, leather-covered steering wheel, eight-way adjustable front seats, keyless entry, automatic climate control, automatic headlights, and heated side mirrors.
Options packages include Sport Activity (running boards, 18-inch wheels, sport steering wheel, and rear privacy glass); Premium (leather upholstery, auto-dimming mirrors, ambient lighting, and Bluetooth); Cold Weather (heated front and rear seats); and Sport (stiffer suspension, sport front seats and steering wheel, and special body accents). Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are available, as are high-performance tires, premium audio, navigation system, and other options. The X3 can tow 3,500 lbs., and has a total of 71 cu. ft. of cargo volume. BMW says the car’s aluminum components result in a lower curb weight and a smoother ride on rough surfaces.
All-wheel drive is standard on the BMW X3 xDrive 30i, and owners may choose a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with manual shift control. The engine is a 260-hp 3.0-liter aluminum/magnesium inline-six that produces 225 lb.-ft. of torque. According to EPA estimates, the X3 delivers 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and20 mpg combined with an automatic transmission, and 16/23/19 with the manual. Safety features include a full complement of airbags, antilock disc brakes, stability control, and hill descent control.
