What’s New?
After a boost in engine output for the 2006 model year, there are minor changes in store for the BMW 6 Series for 2007. A new Pearl leather is available for the interior, audio systems get auxiliary input jacks for iPods or MP3 players, some audio upgrades that were previously part of special packages are now stand-alone options, and BMW’s safety assistance program expands to four years of standard membership.

Overview
BMW’s 6 Series was relaunched for the 2005 model year in the form of a convertible that not only has a power top, but also a rear window above the trunk that retracts into the bodywork to provide an open-air experience, even if the top remains up. For 2007, BMW’s 6 Series comprises a sleek 2-door coupe and the unique convertible that combine luxury accoutrements with dynamic performance potential.

The 6 Series is available in four models: the 650i coupe, 650i convertible, M6 coupe, and M6 convertible. The 650i coupe and convertible both draw power from BMW’s 360-hp, 4.0-liter V-8 engine, while the M versions (M stands for BMW’s Motorsports department, which offers high performance variations of BMW cars) are propelled by a 500-hp, 5.0-liter V-10 engine.

Because BMW’s are designed for people who enjoy driving, a multitude of gear-shifting options are available: manual shift; automatic; and clutchless, paddle-shifted automanual transmissions. The 6 Series models also have the brakes, suspension, and steering gear to deal with the dynamic potential provided by the powerful engines. The cars also carry a full array of safety equipment.

The Competition
The BMW 6 Series competes in the Large Premium Sporty segment, which consists of five models. Buyers in this segment look for exterior styling, performance, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SMwere the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (10,763 units sold), BMW 6 Series (9,322), and Jaguar XK-Series (4,567). The BMW 6 Series’ 9,322 sales in 2006 represent a decrease of 6.2 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Large Premium Sporty segment include the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and SLR.
