2009 BMW 5 Series Wagon

Since this line of executive sedans and wagons underwent significant changes in the 2008 model year, the BMW 5 series was only slightly changed for 2009. The 528i and 528i xDrive (all-wheel-drive) models receive 17-inch light alloy double-spoke wheels with all-season tires as standard equipment, while the 535i 535i xDrive has V-spoke wheels of the same size.

The 535i has a longer list of standard features than the 528i, including adaptive xenon headlights and lumbar support, while the 535i wagon adds a panoramic sunroof, fold-down rear seats, and power lift gate. The top-of-the-line 550i features parking assist, leather upholstery, and auto-dimming mirrors. However, most of those standard features are available as options on lower trim levels, including larger wheels, active steering, front and rear parking assist, upgraded seats, and sport-tuned suspension.

The BMW 535i offers a turbocharged inline six cylinder engine, which the company says accelerates this model from 0 to 60 mph in about a half a second less than the top-of-the-line 550i, which features a V8 engine. According to BMW estimates, it delivers only one mile less per gallon (combined) than the 528i.

The 528i has a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine that delivers 230 hp and 200 lb.-ft. of torque. The 535i’s turbocharged engine boasts 300 horses and 300 lb.-ft. The 4.8-liter V8 engine in the 550i produces 360 hp and 360 lb.-ft. of torque. A six speed manual transmission is standard, with an automatic transmission available. The automaker estimates gas mileage at 18 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined for the 528i; 17/26/20 for the 335i; and 15/23/18 for the 550i.

In NHTSA crash tests, the 5 Series received three stars for driver protection in a frontal crash, and five stars for front passenger protection as well as front and rear side protection. The IIHS gave the 5 Series a “Good” rating for its frontal-offset test, and a “Marginal” rating for side safety.
