The BMW 1 Series lineup of small family cars with luxury features was introduced for the 2008 model year. The 2009 lineup is little changed from the prior year. It consists of two models—the 128i and 135i models—both available in coupé or convertible configurations.

Standard features on the 128i include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, leatherette vinyl upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 10-speaker stereo with a CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The convertible version has a power-folding soft top.

The 135i trim adds a turbocharged engine, sport-tuned suspension (which is also optional on the 128i), 18-inch wheels, xenon headlights, and automatic climate control. Sunroof and split folding rear seats are standard equipment on coupés. The Premium Package adds leather upholstery, power front seats, and BMW Assist. The Sport Package adds sportier suspension, trim, and bucket seats. A voice-activated navigation system, various interior trims, and heated front seats are additional options. The convertible models offer an optional Moonlight Black top, which features silvery metallic strands of fabric in the headliner, and its optional leather upholstery includes sun-reflective pigments to lower seat surface temperatures.

All 1 Series models feature 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines. In the 128i, the engine produces 230 hp and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, while the 135i features a turbocharged engine that makes 300-hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and an automatic is optional. All models have rear-wheel drive.

The 128i coupe with a manual transmission delivers 18 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, according to the EPA. The 135i with manual transmission delivers 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. Available safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control system, curtain side airbags (for coupés), and front side airbags.

The 2009 BMW 1 Series starts around $29,000.
