What’s New?
The Acura TL was totally redesigned for the 2004 model year. For 2006, a tire pressure monitoring system was added to the standard features list. Acura says its engineers have worked to reduce torque steer (the tendency of a front-wheel-drive vehicle to pull to one side during hard acceleration) in models equipped with manual transmissions. Like all 2006 Acuras, the TL gets an extended powertrain warranty. Vehicle Stability Assist, anti-lock brakes, and traction control are also standard on all TLs.

Overview
The Acura TL is a luxury performance sedan powered by a 258-hp, 3.2L V-6 engine that is rated at 20 mpg in town and 29 mpg on the highway. Those figures apply whether the car has a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

Models with the manual transmission have a limited-slip differential that helps distribute power evenly between the front wheels. For 2006, changes in the transmission control module are designed to reduce torque steer. The manual version also features Brembo brakes, the same brand of brakes that is featured on many high-end sports cars.

The TL comes standard with tilt and telescoping steering column, front bucket seats with perforated leather seating surfaces, eight-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat, an electronic driver information display, ELS premium 8-speaker surround sound audio system with DVD player, 6-disc CD changer/Dolby cassette player, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Standard safety equipment includes side curtain air bags.

The Competition
The TL competes in the Compact Premium segment, a diverse category that also includes the Acura TSX. This segment includes many nameplates and the competition is fierce. Combining luxury features with the sort of dynamic capabilities found in smaller cars scores big points with those who may be entering the luxury class for the first time.

According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM the BMW 3 Series led this category in calendar year 2005 with 106,950 sales. Next came the TL (78,218 sales in 2005), followed by the Infiniti G35 (68,728), Cadillac CTS (61,512), and in a very tight race, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (48,922) and Audi A4 (47,168). Also offered are the Acura TSX, Volvo S60, Saab 9-3, Lexus IS, Jaguar X-Type, Audi A3, and Lincoln Zephyr.
