What’s New?
The Acura MDX gets several enhancements for the 2006 model year. These include changes to the Vehicle Stability Assist system, the addition of XM Satellite Radio as standard equipment, and, like all 2006 Acuras, a six-year/70,000-mile limited powertrain warranty (in addition to the four-year/50,000-mile standard warranty). An all-new version arrives for the 2007 model year.

Overview
Acura launched its mid-size sport utility vehicle, the MDX, as a 2001 model. The 2006 model marks the end of the production run for the vehicle’s first generation. The MDX provides seating for seven, with a “walk-in” feature that allows someone on the curbside to easily slide the second row seat forward for easy access to the third row. The second and third row seats split and fold flat into the floor to provide 82 cubic feet of cargo space. However, even with the seats in their upright positions, the MDX offers 14.8 cubic feet of cargo room.

The MDX is powered by a 265-hp, 3.5L V-6 engine rated at 17 mpg in town and 23 on the highway. A five-speed automatic transmission and Acura’s VTM-4 four-wheel-drive system also are standard equipment. Side curtain airbags are part of the standard safety equipment package that also includes tire-pressure monitors.

Standard equipment includes a power moonroof, digital trip computer, synchronized climate control, leather-trimmed first and second row seats, heated front seats, and a premium sound system. A Touring Package adds a roof rack, alloy wheels, an upgraded sound system, memory for the driver’s seat, and eight-way power for the front passenger seat. For 2006, the Touring Package also includes ebony-colored Zebra wood and Satin Chrome interior trim. A navigation system with voice recognition is available as a factory-installed option, and includes three months of OnStar service.

The Competition
The Acura MDX competes in the Midsize Premium Crossover Utility Vehicle segment where customers expect everything but extreme size and off-road capability. They want room and comfort as well as the confidence that comes from driving with all four wheels providing propulsion.

According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM the Lexus RX Series leads this segment in sales with 108,775 units sold in calendar year 2005. Other leaders include the MDX (57,948), BMW X5 (37,598), Volvo XC90 (35,976), and Mercedes-Benz ML-Class (34,959).
